- "Keep faith.."
- ―Bootleg Jesus
Bootleg Jesus is one of the Victims and the final objective in Cleanse the Orphans. He is a man that is strapped to a wooden cross suspended in the air, completely naked aside from the bag covering his head.
Background[]
Not much is known about Jesus or how he became part of the Trial, but certain voice lines of his infer that he has a relationship to Dr. Easterman. It is likely that there is possible history involving work as a religious figure such as a priest due to his knowledge of Christian bible verses and sins.
Physical Description[]
Jesus is a naked man of fair skin, average height, and average weight. He has a noticeable deep scar on his upper abdomen and what appears to be scratch marks on his left pectoral. He is completely naked, except for the green cloth bag obscuring his face. He is nailed to a wooden cross with two nails driven into his palms, and a leather strap belt around his waist.
Characteristics[]
Like other victims, Bootleg Jesus is a complete NPC and cannot be interacted with beyond sawing his legs off as their objective. Even when the Reagents are sawing his legs, he doesn't attempt to struggle but will wriggle in pain.
He is seemingly still faithful, as his lines will sometimes speak of how he is "trying to believe," even despite the fact that he is strapped onto a cross. Sometimes he will momentarily express anger at the Reagents before recovering his temper, implying that he has been conditioned to forgive the Reagents and accept his treatment. Otherwise, he seems to be very fearful about his punishment by expressing that the Reagents knew what they were doing and trying to convince Easterman that he "learned." He does not say much in comparison to other victims, most times just breathing and groaning in pain.
He screams upon the loss of his legs, moving momentarily before going limp, ceasing all dialogue from him.
Story[]
As found in all versions of Cleanse the Orphans, after entering the chapel and stopping the jukebox, a white curtain will fall, and his cross will propel him forward till he is over the table.
After the Reagents find the two keys and power the generators, the saw blade is used to saw off Jesus's legs and left behind in the chapel as the Reagents leave.
Trivia[]
- The trial objective vaguely refers to him as the "Christ". However, the game files labeled his name as "Bootleg Jesus".
- One of the idle Grunts' dialogues in the orphanage and the speaker in the chapel confirm that he is a mock version of Jesus Christ.
- The same Grunts also revealed that he is the fifth Jesus Christ in the same week.
- One of the idle Grunts' dialogues in the orphanage and the speaker in the chapel confirm that he is a mock version of Jesus Christ.
- In one of his dialogues, he refers to Easterman as 'Father'. This may hint at a familial relationship, a religious view of him, or an engrained mindset of viewing Easterman as a father despite no relation.
- In Red Barrels's Behind the Scenes video, it shows an early version of Bootleg Jesus in the cross made of metal instead of wood and cable wires with clamps connected through his arms and torso.
