Reagent rigs are outfitted with an explosive that will detonate when the timer reaches zero. Collect Time Extenders to buy yourself extra seconds. Even if you survive this Trial, someday time will kill you.

Countdown, also known as Project Countdown, is a limited-time program in The Outlast Trials that features a series of Trials and MK-Challenges where Reagents must survive while their E.S.O.P. is rigged with explosives and could only extend its timer by finding Time Extenders placed throughout the trial. It introduced two new MK Challenges for The Docks, Empty the Vault and Poison the Cattle.

Countdown Program Details
This program features a variator where Reagents need to adapt on finishing Trials or MK-Challenges more efficiently to avoid getting killed by explosives regardless of their situation and manage the timer with Time Extenders. If the bomb timer reaches zero, all Reagents are killed simultaneously and fails the trial even with revives equipped.
Countdown event features 2 parts where the Trials and MK-Challenges are shuffled in a bi-weekly rotation while keeping the variators in every difficulty intact.

Countdown Catalog
Countdown event features a limited-time catalog with exclusive customizations and outfits for the players to customize their Reagent character and Sleep Room cell. However, the Countdown catalog is not re-instated during the Flashback Therapy event.
Countdown Tokens
Completing each all Trials and MK-Challenges, secondary objectives, and Task Challenges from any program will reward a varied amount of Countdown Tokens depending on the difficulty. Reagents can use Countdown Tokens to purchase exclusive cosmetics for themselves or for Sleep Room cell customization from the Countdown Catalog.

Completing 6 tasks of this program rewards the Countdown poster for the player as a customization for their Sleep Room.

On September 5 2024, Red Barrels posted a teaser showcasing a Murkoff Memorandum teaser of modified E.S.O.P. rigged with a bomb and stated that is is necessary to break scientific boundaries to see how Reagents could withstand the test of time.[1] Red Barrels also confirmed that the event will include new MK-Challenges for The Docks.[2]
On September 6 2024, Red Barrels posted another teaser stating the newer trials will be greenlight for live testing and how Time Extenders could work. It reveals that the event will be named COUNTDOWN and releases on September 10, 2024.[3]

- Unlike an existing E.S.O.P. that is rigged with explosives in one of rebirth endings, the modified E.S.O.P. for this event is designed differently to allow Reagents to use rigs, allows the countdown to extend when using Time Extenders, paused during cutscene events, and turned off automatically when Reagents have completed the trial.
