PRIVATE JOURNAL ENTRY OF DR. HENDRICK JOLIET EASTERMAN
Who would tell the sun not to burn? They want temper my children's natural love for fire. Combustion is the driving force of the American Century. This bureaucratic pussyfooting gives me toska.
I would have said once that I had a gift. I was born with certain talents, a capacity for belief in something sublime. But I don't have a gift, I am a gift. I have been given to a task. I am a slave to history. I can teach my children to love fire less. You can love a fine wine without being an alcoholic. I will not apologize to the sun.
Water, symbolically, is both birth and death. I remember as a child my Sunday chore drowning glue-trapped mice. I remember discovering my own body in the privacy of a warm bath. So my children blink out a tiny piece of the sun on the surface of the earth, with liquid sex and death. The Therapy contains multitudes."
