- "If you notice yourself feeling more than ordinary rage and panic, do let me know."
- ―Emily Barlow, the Nurse
Nurse Emily Barlow, also known as The Nurse, is a character in The Outlast Trials. An optimistic nurse employed by the Murkoff Corporation, she is one of the Denizens of the Sleep Room, working as a pharmacist in the Sinyala Facility. She is in charge of selling Prescriptions and Imposter Chems to Reagents, which enhance their physical abilities in both the Trials and Invasion respectively. Unlike the other Denizens, Nurse Barlow is an outspoken supporter of Hendrick Joliet Easterman and the therapy.
Background[]
Emily Barlow took the Degree of Associate in Science Nursing and graduated from Saint Mary's College at Omaha in April 1955. Sometime later, Nurse Barlow was either recruited or hired by the Murkoff Corporation and makes a real effort to be polite to everyone in the Sinyala Facility; she truly believes that Dr.Easterman is a genius, that the Trials will define tomorrow's history and that everybody's life can be improved with a little chemical assistance.
She likes to keep her private life and does her very best not to let the necessary horrors of therapy break through her professional demeanor.
Story[]
The Outlast Trials[]
Nurse Barlow will refuse to provide pharmaceutical services from Reagents until they reach a certain level. Once eligible, she introduces herself by her Christian name, Emily, and offers not only prescriptions but also emotional support, helping Reagents in their Trials for the benefit of Project Lathe. Emily Barlow often shares her experiences, such as watching Easterman at the water cooler and Mother Gooseberry and Leland Coyle being one of the earlier candidates for the Trials.
Over time, Nurse Barlow's optimism rapidly declined after spending an extended period in the Sleep Room. Due to her dislike to taking drugs prescribed to her by Easterman, she eventually began refusing those intended to keep her stable and began experiencing withdrawal. She also began disclosing classified information on the the Korean pilot brainwashing story, explaining that it was actually a cover-up for a secret chemical warfare program operated by American forces. This led her to question whether the prescriptions were actually helping the Reagents and felt captive in the Sinyala Facility, seemingly doubting her trust in Easterman and Murkoff. Despite this, Barlow suddenly overcame her disillusionment after turning back to her prescribed medicine, retracted her earlier statements, and continued to express optimism toward the Reagents in support of their Rebirth and reaffirmed her loyalty to Easterman.
Around April 1960, Emily Barlow heard the rumors about Amelia Collier, a rogue Reagent who had escaped the Trials and was attempting to sabotage Project Lathe. When a Reagent informed her about Amelia trying to communicate through via radio in their cell, she was very disgusted, urging them not to trust her and to report any sightings to the scientists. She prayed that Easterman will eventually capture the escapist and hope the incident will be passed or forgotten.
Personality[]
Nurse Barlow is a caring and empathetic nature, all the while hiding behind a mask of professionalism.
She will prefer to be referred to as "Nurse Barlow", although she introduces herself with her full name.
Physical description[]
Nurse Barlow can be observed wearing a classic Nurse outfit at all times, consisting of a blue long sleeve collared dress, along with an apron, a nurse hat with the Murkoff Corporation logo on it, and a nametag that reads "E. Barlow"
She appears with blonde hair in a typical 1940's hairstyle called "Victory Rolls". She also wears simple red lipstick and blue eyeshadow, with eyeliner on each side. Her nails are painted red.
Trivia[]
- She spends her time reading a romantic novel named The French Nurse.
- According to a diploma that is hanging on the right-hand wall of her Pharmacy, she graduated from Saint Mary's College at Omaha, Nebraska in April 1955.
- Unlike Cornelius Noakes, she is one of the only denizens who initially sided with the Murkoff Corporation.
- To start, she does not seem to care about the Reagents' fate and wants them to improve themselves through participation in the trials.
- She is very aware of the Ex-Pops and mentions Mother Gooseberry and Leland Coyle which were the considered the early Prime Assets for Project Lathe.
- She reveals that the Ex-Pops could gain more control of the Trials if the funds for Dr.Easterman were pulled, something that can also be heard being discussed by scientists in regard to Leland Coyle, with them fearing that their security staff may be getting "too fond" of him.
- While she initially supported Easterman and Murkoff Corporation, she later becomes disillusioned with the admiration she feels toward the former once her headaches get worse due to her longevity in the Sleep Room.
- Due to this, she starts feeling held captive and wants to be free, like Cornelius Noakes, though she communicates this desire much more carefully than Noakes does, even recognising that the Reagents may think she is testing them, and in turn leading them into incriminating themselves in expressing their distrust for Murkoff and Easterman's practices.
- Interestingly, trusting "The Nurse" - presumably Barlow - is someone that the Scapegoats warn Reagents about.
- In the unused dialogues, the doctors nearby would attempt to flirt with her, but she politely rejects these advances.
- In another one of her unused dialogues, it would also imply that her personality and admiration towards Easterman (and others - more likely the Scientists and Reagents) is only a façade.
- She might have also been involved in Project Lathe One and hopes that it will not have another incident.
