SCARFIOTTI- How is Allen?
GOTTLIEB- Allen doesn't change. If the world's making him uncomfortable, he puts the impetus of change on the world.
SCARFIOTTI- Very true, very true. You, however. You said you had a concern.
GOTTLIEB- I did. In, observing a Trial, I head something very disturbing. I heard my name, spoken by one of your, ah... "experimental-population."
SCARFIOTTI- It's not impossible.
GOTTLIEB- I don't know how a patient here would be familiar with me. I avoid the public eye.
SCARFIOTTI- Some very few our Ex-Pop is composed of former Murkoff staff. If they've succumbed to mental difficulties, or become a security risk. Waste not, want not.
GOTTLIEB- Very wise. It's just that, with the project I hope to propose, I need a certain level of trust and discretion.
SCARFIOTTI- You know me, Sid.
GOTTLIEB- And this why we're talking. If I can say... Nobody can hear us here, right?
SCARFIOTTI- Just you and me.
GOTTLIEB- I get an odd feeling from this Easterman fellow. He looks at me as if I'm going to pick his pocket.
SCARFIOTTI- Well. Easterman is an impotent paranoiac with a god complex. It's not that he's uncomfortable around you, Sidney, it's that he's chronically uncomfortable.
GOTTLIEB- Still. The project I would like to propose may be somewhat uncomfortable in its own right.
SCARFIOTTI- Please, Sid. "Uncomfortable" might as well be Murkoff's trademark.
GOTTLIEB- Does "Unit 731" mean anything to you?
SCARFIOTTI- No.
GOTTLIEB- Part of PAPERCLIP. Fascinating material. There's a Japanese doctor I'd like to bring in, he has some very provocative notions..."
