PRIVATE JOURNAL ENTRY OF DR. HENDRICK JOLIET EASTERMAN
A three-day hangover. Can a hangover be bad enough that your hair falls out? My forehead has grown three inches; hair comes away from my scalp by the handful. I look ghastly.
I should know better than to trust any beverage at a Murkoff party. New Years began in the company cafeteria but soon moved downstairs. Everybody wanted to see the new Prime Asset. And from there, shaken, we went to the the pharmacy for more intoxicating concoctions at which point everything, thank god, is a blur. I believe we may have done things to the anesthetized Reagents for which, even after everything else, I will be especially harshly judged by my maker. Avellanos and Scarfiotti vanished early in the evening, probably to plot the ruination of my work. You cannot trust Italians.
Alone and ecstatically drunk at the party, I found myself in conversation with a stuttering young man in thick-rimmed glasses who introduced himself as Sidney. Gottlieb! How was I not notified he would be in attendance?! I made a drunken ass of myself, I'm sure. Gottlieb was sober as a judge, but for the LSD, which he treated like holy communion. Not the character I was expecting; Gottlieb spoke like some sort of bohemian. Extolled to me the virtues of goat milk yogurt and the Bhagavad Gita.
But this morning. My god! I run my hand through my hair and great clumps come free. This is a nightmare. My beautiful hair."
