PRIVATE JOURNAL OF DR. HENDRICK JOLIET EASTERMAN

Hong Kong. Crowds and steam and noise, the incessant thrum of the textile factories. This is not a civilized place for thought.

The Agency wants a full investigation of the technique of hsi nao (translated as "wash brain,") and has put me up in an observation post in Tsuen Wan. They have a dozen veterans for my study, Western and Chinese, exposed to hsi nao techniques.

But there are greater lessons I see in the Chinese Communist parties admitted (even celebrated) program of szu-hsiang kai-tsao, (or "ideological remodeling.") A deliberate shaping of a whole population, which by all indications is taking energetic hold.

The brainwashing victims, on the other hand, are largely listless, near-catatonic in between bouts of aggression. They are not programmed machines so much as broken children."
