AVELLANOS: Tell me this. Who are the most successful politicians of the 20th Century so far?
LAWLER: The Dulles Brothers.
AVELLANOS: Not power brokers. Politicians. People on stage, making obedience look like choice. Making control look like compromise.
LAWLER: Um. Roosevelt? Churchill.
AVELLANOS: No, no. Those were men created by a sytem[sic] and tradition that just kept the ball rolling.
LAWLER: You were just asking the question so you could tell me what you think.
AVELLANOS: Hitler.
LAWLER: Here we go.
AVELLANOS: Mao. And Stalin. Weird, ugly men with magical beliefs. Each one of them the last guy you'd leave alone with your twelve-year-old niece. Losers, criminals. Failures. But as politicians... Unbeatable.
LAWLER: This Kennedy kid is not Hitler. And he's not ugly.
AVELLANOS: Hell of a haircut.
LAWLER: And his politics are about as far from continental fascism as you can get and still hope to win an election.
AVELLANOS: I'm not talking about politics. I'm talking about the politician. Kennedy's a believer, a Catholic. An injured vet who can't operate without barbiturates and amphetamines. You ever mix demarol[sic] and methadone? It's incredbile[sic]. Probably talks to Jesus daily, on top of which he believes some magical Italian has God's phone number. We get a real believer, a real addict in the White House. The sky's the limit. Not even the sky.
LAWLER: It's dangerous.
AVELLANOS: Of course it is. It's why we need to a[sic] political program in Sinyala."
