SCARFIOTTI: A rat in a Skinner Box doesn't need to know why it pushes the level outside of a desire to avoid pain.
EASTERMAN: These are human beings, not rats.
SCARFIOTTI: So prejudiced rats.
EASTERMAN: We're not creating a behavior, we're creating a complex.
SCARFIOTTI: There is no difference.
EASTERMAN: A Psychological Complex has a story. It's pain combined with a story. Let's say somebody is frequently burned with cigarettes; they will quickly learn a fear response to a smoldering cigarette, their behavior will change to avoid cigarettes. Now let's say somebody is frequently burned with cigarettes by their beautiful and voluptuous mother, who whispers, um? "I love you but the donuts are making you fat." That person hasn't just learned a behavior, that person has a Complex.
SCARFIOTTI: So they're not afraid of cigarettes, they're afraid of donuts? This is your big revelation?"
