SCARFIOTTI: So they're not afraid of cigarettes, they're afraid of donuts? This is your big revelation?
EASTERMAN: It only starts with donuts. It's an absurd example, but follow it. That donut was suggested by your voluptuous mother.
SCARFIOTTI: Not my mother. Some rhetorical mother. My mother would never.
EASTERMAN: Some beautiful, busty Platonic mother, blouse one button down on a warm day, a sweat-damp strand of hair plastered to her brow. What does the unconscious brain link to the donut?
SCARFIOTTI: (Laughter)
EASTERMAN: You can see the complications.
SCARFIOTTI: And so you add to the complications. Contradictory objectives. Justice through lies, love through punishment, faith through absurdity, mercy through violence.
EASTERMAN: Yes! Exactly. Extreme contradictory taboo, so provocative as to strip everything of meaning. Leaving a blank place where we can instill precise psychological complexes."
