TRANSCRIPTION FROM TAPE OF CONFERENCE BETWEEN MOSES SCARFIOTTI, AND H.J. EASTERMAN.

Recorded/Filed: Sinyala Facility

EDITED FOR CLARITY

[Minutes 31-33]

SCARFIOTTI: (Unintelligible.)
EASTERMAN: It does not require enormous redesign. The Trial Environments have the same basic shape and aesthetic. Coyle will believe he is the law in his private fiefdom. Gooseberry will believe she is in her make-believe world of childhood joy. Their belief, their control over the Ex-Pop creates a furnace of violent taboo within which we can burn away the Reagent's personalities.
SCARFIOTTI: It's too complicated.
EASTERMAN: It has to be difficult or they won't learn. They have to participate in the lesson.
SCARFIOTTI: So tell me what they are learning here. Gates and keys, these symbols.
EASTERMAN: The symbols all represent luck. The marks on playing cards, rabbits, stars. Luck, fortune, wishes. The law is arbitrary. A murderer is punished much more than an attempted to murderer. They are simply being punished for being competent. Or more likely, for being lucky. They have to believe the law is arbitrary, but simultaneously undeniable.
SCARFIOTTI: Talking to you is exhausting.
EASTERMAN: They will believe that a donut is nothing but a donut. And then we can show them what a donut really is.
SCARFIOTTI: (Unintelligible.)"
