TRANSCRIPTION FROM TAPE OF CONFERENCE BETWEEN A. BRADLEY AVELLANOS AND JAMESON LAWLER (CIA)

EDITED FOR CLARITY

[minutes 21-24]

AVELLANOS: Just a prototype. We're having our engineering team work out some bugs, but it's very close to the final product.
LAWLER: Bugs?
AVELLANOS: Premature detonations.
LAWLER: What is that look supposed to mean?
AVELLANOS: They blow early, before the experiment really even gets started.
LAWLER: Alice. If there's something you want to say you can just say it. I had a nice time. I thought we had a nice time.
AVELLANOS: This is a recorded room.
(several moments of silence, possible WHISPERING. LAUGHTER.)
AVELLANOS: Our... ah, excuse me. Our scientists think we can train the Reagents for more precise detonation. In the Trials the Fuse Box will allow them to extend time before detonation. We could minimize collateral damage.
LAWLER: Saigon.
AVELLANOS: Exactly.
LAWLER: What's to stop them from endlessly extending time in the field?
AVELLANOS: It's training wheels. Inside a context of suffering, detonation is a release, and delaying that becomes satisfaction denied. Easterman believes we can make them fetishize their own explosive release.
LAWLER: I'd like to study this further. Someplace more discreet.
(WHISPERING, LAUGHTER)"
