MURKOFF PSYCHIATRIC SYSTEMS
PROJECT LATHE TWO
Project Lead: Dr. Hendrick Joliet Easterman
CLASSIFICATION GUIDELINES: NIGHT HUNTERS
ARCHETYPE
Military volunteers whose surgical night-vision augmentation has inspired grandiose delusions, including identification as a figure from myth, or a new and nocturnally predacious species of sapiens.
AUGMENTATIONS
The technology has its roots in PAPERCLIP science. Based in a second-generation "Vampir" system, it was developed as a Wunderwaffe late in World War II. Still relying on an infrared light source, (chest-mounted,) vision is additionally augmented with photocathode elements, and direct pain stimulation of the primary sensory areas of the cerebellum, along with the primary and secondary visual areas of the brain.
Necessary pre-conditioning of Night Hunter patients includes a retinal isolation procedure originally developed in cooperation with Aribert Heim, in which patients' eyeballs are immobilized with pins through the sclera until the muscles atrophy, so that direct, undisturbed stimulation can be applied to the retina. As the entire head must move, (rather than the motion of the eyes,) autopsy of Night Hunters has shown significant enlargement of the colliculi.
PYSCHOLOGY
Beset by narcissism and a manic-depressive reaction, Night Hunters consider themselves perhaps literally super-human. Records show that our (since deceased) PAPERCLIP scientist in R&D may have been filling subject's heads with Teutonic fairy tales and ghost stories. He seems to have infected Night Hunters with both supernatural delusions and perhaps his Slavic accent.
DOCTOR'S NOTE
The Night Hunter system should allow similar light sensitivity to the night-vision systems employed by Reagents, as the intervening decade of technology has revealed significantly advanced photocathode surfaces that more than make up for the Night Hunter's additional augmentations. In testing, however, the Night Hunter performs at a significant advantage. This may be explained by what appears to be an immune response in the visual cortex, some unexpected interaction with the hardware."
