The smell and taste of cordite are remarkably similar. The rim of the barrel has a metallic taste, whether blood or some alloy of copper and iron I cannot say. Franco's gun is too large to fit comfortably in my mouth, but the pressure on my jaw was not unpleasant. I had to take a few minutes to make myself presentable again before returning to public view.
I spent the time considering the twin barrels of the weapon. Gun bores have a brutish approximation of the eyes of a charismatic figure. They demand obedience, they promise efficiency and power, they operate via mechanical imitations of sexual processes impossibly amplified. A culture awash in guns may be impossible to control, guns are to authority as pornography is to sex, easy and false and meaningless. Franco's weapon left an indentation on my lips, invisible in the mirror but I can still feel it even now. Difficult not to put the weapon to my head just one more time."
