- "(Long scream)"
- ―Pitcher's battle cry upon entering the Trial
Molotovs, better known as The Pitchers, are some of the antagonists in The Outlast Trials. They are pyromaniacal Specialist Ex-Pop who can throw molotovs that explode on impact at the Reagents and unleash a fiery breath when they get too close.
Background[]
As revealed in their Ex-Pop classification file, the Pitchers are military servicemen turned pyromaniacs that developed an extreme obsession with the use of napalm and other incendiary technologies in war, particularly World War II and the Korean War and are responsible for causing thousands of civilian deaths during the war. Viewing themselves as shamans to a pagan god of fire, the Pitchers see military-scientific advancement in thermal weaponry including flamethrowers and bombing as evidence of the deity existing.
They are instructed by Murkoff staff to craft their own Molotov cocktails and cannot speak as they have severely damaged their larynxes from ingesting too much gasoline.
Characteristics[]
Like the Pusher, the Pitcher occasionally emerges from the Ex-Pop insertion gate at any point during the Trial. Upon entering, Reagents can detect his presence through the glow of his molotov fire and his enthusiastic wailing as he exits the gate.
Unlike the Pusher and Imposters, the Pitcher has a longer search duration before leaving the Trial. This can become problematic if he camps stationary objectives, such as the cart, battery switches, or the victim's execution chamber. In such cases, Reagents must be very patient, either waiting for him to leave the area or deliberately get chased to lure him away from the objective.
When chasing a Reagent, the Pitcher has different attacks depending on his distance. At long range, he throws a molotov cocktail that temporarily stuns Reagents upon impact and creates a temporary fiery area that deals damage over time. Reagents must exercise caution when throwing objects, as they risk being caught in the flames or stunned by his bottle. Instead, they should wait for him to throw his molotov, dodge the resulting flames, and then use an opportunity to throw an item at him as he reloads. Reagents can also use doors to stall him, preventing him from throwing molotovs and forcing him to either open or bash through them. At close range, he uses his nozzle as a flamethrower, inflicting significant damage. However, unlike most Ex-Pop, avoiding his fire breath grants Reagents more time to create distance, as it always locks in one direction, making it easier to evade.
Despite the flames that would realistically hurt anyone, they do not affect the Ex-Pop, including Specialist classes, such as the Screamers who remain unaffected by flames on the ground, and Night Hunter whose vision is not impaired by the blinding effect of his flames. However, strategic Reagents can exploit his bottle throws by positioning themselves behind Screamers, idle Grunts, or Pouncers' hiding spots. If these Ex-Pop are directly hit by the bottles, they will flee from their positions immediately. Despite Pitcher's thrown bottles having a stagger effect on Reagents, they do not stagger the Ex-Pop, including patrolling Grunts, Big Grunts, or Prime Assets. However, these Ex-Pop can still criticize or throw insults similarly to how they do with Reagents.
When exiting the Trial after a certain amount of time, he will extinguish the fire from his molotov cocktail before entering the Ex-Pop insertion gate. If he notices Reagents while retreating, he will re-ignite his molotov and continues pursuing his target. Both Pitcher and Pusher cannot appear in the Trial simultaneously. The Pusher will not appear unless he is chosen to be deployed first or until the Pitcher leaves. If Reagents manage to delay the Pitcher's retreat to the insertion gate, the Pusher will not appear until the Pitcher exits the Trial. The same applies if the Reagents delay the Pusher's return to the insertion gate, preventing the Pitcher from appearing.

Physical description[]
The Pitcher is dressed in blue pants and brown boots, with only straps on his chest that are holding up the three gas canisters on his back. On his right hand he wears a long, dark brown leather glove, with their left one being shorter with gold tipped fingers. He wears a metallic, full face mask with an apparatus on the mouth that allows him to breathe fire, with a tube that connects to his canisters. He has black dreadlocks that are swept back and the veins all over his body are very pronounced. He wears four Molotov bottles on his waist and is seen carrying one.
Trivia[]
- The concept arts for Pitcher was shown in Trials' second documentary video.[1]
- While showing the early version of Docks, his name was listed as one of the Specialists groups for Ex-Pop.[1]
- In his dialogue, the Pitcher makes references to Sidney Gottlieb and Allen Dulles, both leading figures in Project MKUltra.
- The term 'pitcher' is a reference to the same name used in sports, where the pitcher throws a baseball toward the catcher.
- In the leaked and early versions, the Pitcher model was completely different:
- It had a sack on his head, wears a suspenders that support his pants, and does not wear any gloves and three gas tanks on his back that would connect into his mouth.
- He was also not originally going to have a fire breathing ability.
- The pitcher originally had three different models (two male, one female) and the male models' voice lines had been recorded by the time the data breach took place; as of Season 2, the Pitcher only has one model, is incapable of speaking due to sever laryngeal burns, and possesses both a ranged and melee elemental attack, as well as a melee weapon. The leaked voice lines are, apparently, being reworked for a different ex-pop class, the Hunter, whose concept art was also shown during the docuseries produced as a companion piece to the open beta.
- The Pitcher is the second Outlast character to be a pyromaniac. The first is the Pyromaniac patient.
- The Pitcher is the second ranged enemy added to The Outlast Trials. The first is Franco Barbi.
- The Pitcher is the third Outlast antagonist that possess a ranged attack. The first is Laird Byron and the second is Franco Barbi.
