- "You are the surgeon's knife, and where you meet flesh, blood and pain must follow. We are the surgeon's medicine, who regulate pain and death. Poison the supply of those who would ease pain, and we will let you out."
- ―Hendrick Joliet Easterman
Poison the Medicine is a trial in The Outlast Trials. It is the first trial to take place in the Docks trial environment. It was released on July 16th, 2024 with the release of Season 1: Project Lupara.
The Trial[]
It is currently featured in Program Genesis and Bambino, in all four ranges of difficulty.
Gameplay[]
In a godless world, opiates will be the religion of the masses. Take control of drug production, and you can kill with the nonchalance of a god.
Reagents must locate the drug lab and poison the drugs, repackaging them in order to gain control. First they travel to the end of the pier, lifting up the metal door and making their way inside. They must head to shuttle doors at the control panel building and witness the cutscene with Franco. After Franco departs, the shuttles collapse and they must head to the Drug Laboratory.
Once inside the Reagents must head into the back room and transfer two drug packages through the transfer window, cutting them open and inserting the contents into the drug cooker. After that is completed, the drug cart must be pushed out of the drug lab and towards the train depot. Slotting the cart into place will lift two grate doors, and Reagents are instructed to pick up a decoder and decipher the needed code to obtain the drug package within the puzzle box. The code appears as an optical illusion in yellow paint, requiring the player to stand at the right angle and distance in order for the image to form, allowing the decoder to pick up the numbers.
Franco will appear inside the train depot after depositing the package into the cart, and Reagents must avoid him while searching for the other paint symbols needed for the boxes. After retrieving all of the drugs the cart is pushed all the way back to the drug lab, where they are taken out and dumped into the drug cooker.
Double doors with a gas mask symbol will be unblocked and Reagents are able to pick up a poison canister, which needs to be taken to the drug cooker. The Reagents are then able to travel across the boat and into the chemical storage building, looking for the other canisters on the bottom, base, and second floors while avoiding absorbing too much noxious gas. The gas is taken back to the cooker, where the crank is then available to turn in order to cut and process the drugs.
Drug packets are dispensed and must be picked up and taken onto the ship. Once on the ship, a cutscene is triggered, Franco emerging from the cargo hold hatch and shooting the large window to jump through. Reagents must avoid him and make their way towards the drug mule victims.
There are two men inside of hazard bags, and they must be sawed into to make a space to stuff the drugs inside. After stuffing all needed drugs, Reagents then must leave the trial.
Easter Egg: Duck hunt[]
Duck Hunt (Secret reward)
Various rubber ducks can be found from hidden spots in this trial. When the player pings it, the notification prompt will display a special name of the duck with the squeaking sound effect that replaces the regular ping dialogue from Reagent. Pinging all ducks will grant a secret Small Item reward.
- Donald - When reaching the pier, go to the right side that leads to the extra pathway with red markers behind the magazine stand and look below the water.
- Duck It - On the secondary pier below, the rubber duck can be found beside another dead body. When playing standard or higher difficulty, there is a chance that a Big Grunt could spawn there, pummelling a corpse.
- Seductive - On the entrance of Drug Laboratory, there is a walkway below with two separate stairs. On the left staircase, the rubber duck can be found on the water between the entrance for Drug Laboratory and Train Depot.
- Duckr. Codereview - In the right stairs walkway from the entrance of Drug Laboratory, another rubber duck can be found underneath the gaps of the stairs.
- Duck Brown - Inside the Drug Laboratory, the rubber duck can be found in one of the restrooms that has only one toilet.
- Duck Norris - In the train depot area, the rubber duck can be found underneath the ramp with petroleum container that leads to the train cargo container and another stairs leading to the light office.
- Ludwig Von Duck - Found underneath the docks of the large ship. It is recommended to use night vision to see the duck.
- Tape - At the docks with the large ship, the rubber duck can be found on the back hull of the ship.
- Duckr. Pepper - At the ramp between the large ship and poison storage, another rubber duck can be found between two large metal bars.
- Tales - Found right side under the front or bow of the large ship. It can also get briefly spotted from the Train Depot entrance by peeking.
Trivia[]
- A Whitehorn Petroleum sign can be seen from the first control room.
- The same co-op jump shown in the Gamescon trailer[1] and the clip played in the main menu can be seen from the control room office or the right side of the Drug Laboratory entrance.
- Throughout the trial, players can find a number of yellow rubber ducks located in inaccessible parts of the map that contain water. If a player pings one of these ducks, it will make a squeaking sound and inform the player via a prompt that the duck has been pinged. These ducks all have unique named that are either a reference or clever wordplay, such as Donald, Duckr. Pepper, Ludwig Von Duck, and Tales.
