TRANSCRIPTION FROM TAPE OF CONFERENCE BETWEEN A. BRADLEY AVELLANOS AND H.J. EASTERMAN
EDITED FOR CLARITY
[Minutes 1-5]
AVELLANOS: Can I interrupt? Jesus. What's[sic] wrong with you?
EASTERMAN: Do you ever visit Amelia?
AVELLANOS: What, in her hospital bed? No. This is science, I don't look back.
EASTERMAN: She lingers.
AVELLANOS: Let her die. Christ. The Agency is pissed. I would be, too. Look at these files. Files on six activated Reagents, these were all supposed to be simple, quiet, exterminations.
EASTERMAN: These are all arson.
AVELLANOS: Yeah, the CIA noticed that, too. Their intelligence gathering must be improving. We told them we could give them scalpels; what we sold them's a bunch of firebugs.
EASTERMAN: I would have thought the Molotovs would be enough to discourage a fire fetish. Maybe we need a little more carrot and a little less stick. It will take time.
AVELLANOS: We don't have time. We need to make a gesture to the Agency. Something soon; they want to get a 1961 budget confirmed before the election.
EASTERMAN: Sure, sure. Some sort of, I don't know, volunteer fire department Trial. But the problem's deeper. It's not just about getting the matches out of their hands. It's about putting a knife in it.
AVELLANOS: We can't allow Reagents to be armed inside the facility.
EASTERMAN: Of course not. Still...
AVELLANOS: Now you're smiling.
EASTERMAN: I can always count on you to cheer me up.
AVELLANOS: What's going on?
EASTERMAN: Don't you just marvel sometimes as the totemic flexibility of phalic[sic] ideation?
AVELLANOS: I'm going to leave you to it."
