The form handed to the Reagents for Rebirth

Rebirth, formerly known as the Reagent Release Protocol, is a game mechanic in The Outlast Trials that serves as the final step for Reagents to complete their therapy and become "reborn" as a sleeper agent for the Murkoff Corporation and the CIA. Upon acquiring 100 Rebirth Tokens, Reagents must talk to the guard seated at the Rebirth desk in the Sleep Room and sign a waiver before they are allowed to step through to the final shuttle terminal. They are instructed to: "Walk through the door, and earn their freedom".

After completion, one of the endings will be shown as well as the credits, before all of the intro game cutscenes are sped through. Players will then be able to create a new Reagent, while keeping all of their previous amps, prescriptions, character and cell cosmetics, and all their currencies. Players will also receive additional rewards at every completion via Reborn outfits, milestones trophies, prestige avatar icons, 100 Murkoff Stamps, and 10,000 XP. If the player completes the Communal Rebirth, they will also earn one of the newspapers.

The Rebirth was temporarily closed during the Project Relapse update after a containment breach in the Sinyala Facility. It was eventually brought back with Communal Rebirth in the Project Diarchy update.

History[]

April 24, 1960: Rebirth program is temporarily closed. Amelia Collier gets tied on top of the closed Rebirth as a punishment for the facility breach.^[1]^[2]
June 1, 1960: Easterman orders the staffs to remove Amelia from the Rebirth counter for urgent medical care.^[3]
June 25, 1960: Easterman re-opens the Rebirth program with the option of completing a Communal Rebirth.^[4]

Gameplay[]

Solo Rebirth[]

SOLO REBIRTH will return you alone to the Mansion where your therapy began.

Farewell

After exiting the shuttle, the Reagent is taken back to the Mansion, the same location where they began their pre-conditioning for the trails with lights turning on and off periodically. They start by delivering boxes of paperwork containing their new "Identities" to the proper authorities. Once this is complete they enter the mansion's courtyard downstairs and collect two keys from corpses to unlock the bottom areas of the mansion. From here the Reagents are instructed to "Hear the words, See the words." They then proceed around the mansion fixing and listening to three frequency machines, each playing a different word out loud ("Spider, Eye, Lamb" ), while the Reagent is dealing with numerous Ex-Pop from the previous trials trying to stop their rebirth.

As they tune the frequency machines, the Reagent finds a gas can, either around the den or outside to power the generator in the basement of the small house in order to activate the film projector while the Prime Assets regularly emerge from the Monster Closets, searching for them momentarily. After powering the generator, the Reagent heads to the theater to retrieve a film reel either from the theater lobby or the backroom behind the theater to swap it with the one in the film projector and see the words. Once both of these instructions have been completed, the Reagent is simply given the order of "Rebirth", the many screens around the trail now display phrases such as: "You are Reborn" and "Reach the World".

The Reagent then exits through the mansion's front doors, enters a side door by the closed shuttles, and proceeds into the backrooms of the facility. They approach the previously locked door marked "Employees Only", which now opens. Upon opening the door, the Reagent experiences a brief blackout, and suddenly gets submerged underwater. They rise to the surface, find themselves in a dark, vast ocean illuminated by a bright white light in the distance. As they approach the light across the water by foot, a blaring noise reminiscent of the effects seen from the Radio Towers in previous games becomes increasingly louder.

Increased difficulty
Upon the release of Project Lupara, the Release Protocol was renamed into Rebirth, introduced new objectives and increased difficulty based on the number of Rebirths until the player reaches their fifth Rebirth. The key differences between lower and higher difficulties are as follows:

In lower difficulties, two small Grunts patrol around the area that guards the Public Records Office and Private Records Office. In higher difficulties, they are replaced by Big Grunts.
The Big Grunts with axes patrol the generator house and gazebo in lower difficulties. In higher difficulties, they are replaced with Night Hunters and Screamers.
In higher difficulties, the Berserker appears in the lobby where player must observe the television screens for key symbols.
In higher difficulties, Pouncers begin to appear.
In higher difficulties, one of the Prime Assets will chase the player as they reach the Employees Only door. In lower difficulties, no enemies will appear at this point.

COMMUNAL REBIRTH will take you on a mirror-image replay of a Trial, alone or in a group; a reflection of all we've accomplished here.

Communal

When choosing Communal Rebirth, Reagents have an option to complete it alone or with a group as long as all Reagents present have the sufficient amount of Rebirth Tokens.

Unlike Solo Rebirth, Communal Rebirth sends Reagents to a random compatible MK-Challenge:

However, Easterman's pre-conditioning will instead inform them that this is their final Trial needed to earn their freedom. The psychosis gas administered in the Shuttle is replaced with Kress MIVIM so Reagents are forced to navigate while their perspective is completely mirrored. The Reagents must also deal with the classified variator, which randomly applies one of the following effects:

They must also complete a mandatory Rebirth objective of tuning three frequency boxes and deliver Rebirth records (scaled based on player count) that can only be carried by a specific Reagent to the drop point near the shuttles. Otherwise, they will not be able to leave, even if they have completed the Trial's main objective, until the mandatory objective is fulfilled.

Once Reagents complete both Rebirth and Trial's main objective, they can finally leave through the exit shuttles and earn the Communal Rebirth ending.

Solo[]

After completing Solo Rebirth, one of the five random endings will occur. As of the Winter Kills 2024 and Project Breach update, there are currently five endings and more will be added in the future updates.

Ending 1: Havana^[5]	The Reagent's vision upon hearing the trigger words The reflection of Easterman staring back at the Reagent. After the Reagent enters the white light, they wake up in a hotel room. They are covered in blood and panicked, looking around. They get up from the bed, and shortly after, a phone begins to ring within the room. The Reagent answers the phone and hears the voice of Easterman speaking to them, repeating the words: "Spider, Eye, Lamb". Upon hearing these words, the Reagent puts down the phone and enters a delirious state; their vision narrows, darkens rapidly, and begins to shake violently, they then see the face of Easterman looking back at them within the window before cutting to black. Various items inside the hotel room, as well as a flag which can be seen waving outside on a building on the opposite street, indicate that the Reagent is in Havana, Cuba. This Ending is consistent with the 'Cuban Adventure' mentioned in correspondence between Avellanos and Lawler.
Ending 2: Saigon^[6]	The Reagent mere seconds from crashing the car The Reagent looking at the conference building After the Reagent enters the white light, they regain consciousness in the driver's seat of a car. After the Easterman can be heard in the background saying, "Only I love you." and the Skinner Man briefly appearing in the rear-view mirror, then the car ends up crashing into the back of a parked blue car parked in front of the Southern Vietnam - USA Friendship Conference building (with the same words at the bottom in Vietnamese), and then the Reagent looks down to see a dynamite strapped into them instead of their ESOP ticking down, their hands tied into the steering wheel, and their mouth presumably duct-taped. Upon realizing this, they panic and breathe rapidly before the dynamite explodes.
Ending 3: Morphogenic Engine^[7]	The Reagent upon waking in the chamber to see Dr. Wernicke and two Scientists in the Underground Labs of Mount Massive After the Reagent enters the white light, they regain consciousness inside of a chamber, which is quickly filled with an unknown substance. A mouthpiece is attached to their face, and they appear to be in an upright position, looking out of a glass dome covering their head in the direction of a projector screen. Through the glass, they are able to spot another person to the right of them, that seems to have been placed in a similar contraption, and most prominently, Dr. Wernicke and two scientists, who are discussing that the Reagent's brain is littered with tumors^[8]^[9] and that it would be best to use them for this 'experiment' as they are already close to being dead. Dr. Wernicke says that if that were simply the case, then they would not have gone to the lengths to travel to Colorado. Upon saying that the tumors could be the touch of God, the large screen turns on and begins showing various Rorschach images, and the Skinner Man's black tendrils begin to creep into the Reagent's vision before cutting to black. The environment the Reagents find themselves in is very reminiscent of the Assembler Chambers in the underground laboratories of Mount Massive Asylum. Wernicke's note of them having been transported to Colorado only furthers the conclusion that they are in Mount Massive.
Ending 4: Beijing^[10]	The Reagent waking up to see a man overdosing next to them After the Reagent enters the white light, they regain consciousness on top of a bed, opening their eyes to see a syringe in their hand and a naked man overdosing on the bed next to them. They stand up from the bed in shock as the man dies, before being able to look around the living area. There are packets of heroin, similar to the ones produced in Poison the Medicine, at the side of the bed. There is a table where a portrait of Mao Zedong hangs over it, with two banners on either side in Chinese. There is a kitchen area with pans, pots, and various ingredients. There is a table with candles and incense, as well as a plate of apples, with two photographs (one familial, and the other of a woman's portrait) hanging over it. There is an office area with several tables showing notebooks and documents, file cabinets, and more photographs of Chinese men. A map hangs over the desk, with highlighted dots and several mountain ranges. There is a hallway that leads to the front door, which is bright red. Knocking will be heard periodically until Reagent answers the door, with Easterman's voice saying: "Spider, Eye, Lamb". The door will then slam open and knock the Reagent to the ground, revealing Dr. Easterman with the Skinner Man's tendrils, before his face changes to a skull. The tendrils grab onto the Reagent's ankle and drags them towards the door before cutting to black.
Ending 5: Congo^[11]	A hostage attempting to run away before getting shot. After the Reagent enters the white light, they open their eyes to the Congo jungles at night, with other captives kneeling next to them with bags covering their heads. There is a Russian soldier standing to the left of the Reagent, and a Congo soldier with a gun to the right that shoots the first captive. Another hears this and attempts to run but gets shot and drops to the ground, and the soldier fires two more shots. The Congo soldier translates various questions asked by the Russian soldier in English, questioning how they found Patrice Lumumba. The soldier then says "What does this mean: Spider, Eye, Lamb?!" As soon as the trigger phrase is heard, the Reagent's vision begins to blur red and they see the Skinner Man emerge and crawl towards them. Their vision blacks out and they come back to themselves killing the Russian soldier by gouging his eyes out. The Congo soldier and the rest of the hostages were also killed during the Reagent's blackout. They get up and the Reagent explores the environment, seeing the dead bodies and a pit of corpses. After roaming for several seconds, the Reagent is shot and falls to the ground and it cuts to the credits.

Communal[]

After completing Communal Rebirth, the screen cuts to Easterman's speech about the Reagents serving his and Murkoff Corporation's goals before showing one of the newspapers highlighting the rebirth Reagent's impact on the outside world. The newspaper is then unlocked to the player, can be viewed anytime by interacting with the Director in their Sleep Room cell.

Newspaper 3	KNIFE ATTACK INSIDE VATICAN Crazed Attacker Dead By Suicide After Injuring Three. Victims included an American, Boston's Vicar General, along with a British Auxiliary Bishop, both prominent Catholics in Rome to prepare draft documents for Pope John XXIII's upcoming Vatican Council. The Catholic Church released a statement condemning the attack, and asking for the public's assistance in recovering documents lost in the confusion.

France has been at war with guerrilla forces in Algeria since 1954, where separatist rebels have waged a campaign of terror both at home and abroad.
Newspaper 5	FIRE, EXPLOSIONS IN VLADIMIRSKIY YURIDICHESKIY INSTITUTE Dozens Injured in Blaze, Security Measures Doubled at Neighboring Prison The blaze quickly grew out of control, following the failures of both telephone lines and localized sirens. When firefighters arrived, they were able to draw water from the facilities at the neighboring Vladimir Central Prison, currently holding American spy and pilot, Gary Francis Powers. Officials assure that the incident posed no threat to the security or operations of the prison.
Newspaper 6	GUATEMALAN AMBASSADOR DETAINED Belgian Federal Police Release Rosal After Evidence Vanishes Mr. Rosal was arrested at Brussels Airport, disembarking from an airplane inbound from Beirut. Belgian officials promised consequences for the arresting officers, after the ambassador was detained based on seemingly imaginary evidence. Mr. Rosal continued on to the embassy in Luxembourg.

Reborn Outfits
Completing Rebirth unlocks one of five random outfits, allowing the player to use it as outfit customizations from the Sleep Room. Repeating this completion can also allow the player to unlock more outfits until all four of them are obtained.

Reborn and Release Trophies
Completing Rebirth at milestones of 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 completions unlocks both Reagent Release and Reborn Trophies, which the player can place as Medium Item customizations in their Sleep Room. The player must claim the trophy through completed Rebirth task first to be unlocked.

Murkoff Suspends Reborns Program Temporarily
- In response to the recent escape attempts, Murkoff has temporarily suspended the Rebirth program.
- To serve as a reminder of the escape incident, Amelia is now displayed in the Sleep Room.
- Additionally, the Reborn counter has been concealed.

July 15, 2025 (Project Diarchy)

This new Rebirth drops the players in a random Trial with 3 unique variators.
- Mirror Variator - The perspective of the Trial has shifted. All Trials now feel completely different.
- Rebirth Variator - It's time to rebuild yourself. Each player must locate their records box hidden in the Trial and return it to the drop location near the shuttle. There are also 3 radio frequencies that must be tuned to discover familiar words. These 2 secondary objectives must be completed on top of the regular Trial objective in succeed and escape.
- Classified Variator - A surprise variator has been injected into the therapy. You'll discover what it is as you play. You're gonna need to adapt - or die.
Rebirth now requires each member of a group to have 100 Rebirth Tokens. It is now possible to stack up to 1000 Rebirth Tokens. Rebirth Token rewards for completing Trials have been revisited (5 Rebirth Tokens per Trial, and 3 Rebirth Tokens per MK-Challenge).
Tasks associated to successfully completing the new Rebirth protocol are now available! Become Reborn and you will be rewarded with a new Trophy (and the old ones if you had not received them in the past), as well as a selection of exclusive Legendary outifts.
