"What we do here is going to define the twentieth century. It's going to be an age of faith."
―A Sinyala Scientist

Scientists are a large group of various working professionals that work for the Murkoff Corporation. They largely make up the staff in the Sinyala Facility and Mount Massive Asylum, and are seen doing the majority of the work towards testing Reagents and Variants.

Both Project Lathe and Project Walrider are highly dependent on their cooperation and intelligence.

Story[]

The Outlast Trials[]

The scientists are introduced during the intro cutscene as one of the people responsible for drilling the night vision goggles on top of Reagents' heads while performing incisions on the deceased.

They are primarily seen in the Sleep Room, through the Shuttle windows, the completion Shuttle after Trials, and throughout Trial environments as they observe the Reagents. They document Reagents as well as the entirety of Project Lathe 2.

Some can be seen treating Reagents, taking inventory at the Pharmacy, observing the Reagents from the Oversight Area, and walking around in the blocked off areas of the facility.

Outlast: Whistleblower[]

Primarily seen in the beginning of the game in the Underground Lab and Hospital, many of the scientists contribute to the Walrider Project and the monitoring of the various Variants. Many of them are seen fleeing during the Mount Massive Asylum Incident.

Waylon watches a group of Variants murder a doctor within the Hospital, they instruct him to come inside, to which the leader offers for him to mutilate the doctor's corpse further. Upon refusal, the leader becomes upset and tells Waylon to leave lest he kill him.

Waylon encounters another scientist after escaping from his cell, who informs him that he is a doctor before seeing that Waylon is dressed as a Variant to which he quickly changes his story to say he stole the clothes. He begs Waylon to open the doors so that they both can leave together. Upon pressing the button, a Variant came in and grabbed the doctor, smashing his head against the window until he kills him.

The scientists in Mount Massive have two outfits.

Outfit 1: Full light blue surgical jacket with hood and matching pants, black shoes, black arm length gloves, and a black gas mask.

Outfit 2: Black surgical cap, separate black face mask, black goggles, white shirt, black gloves, blue pants, and black shoes.

Andrew and Steve both wear outfit 1, however they are seen without the gas mask.

Personality[]

The Outlast Trials[]

Aside from notable scientists such as Doctor Jasper and Doctor Penfield, the majority of scientists do not have observable personalities. From dialogue, they seem to only care about their job and various tasks to be done. They appear impartial to the Reagents, viewing them neutrally. However they do discuss how they have faith in Project Lathe and that what they are doing will redefine the 20th Century.

Outlast: Whistleblower[]

Most scientists ignore Waylon, but their conversations can still be overheard. They view the Variants with neutrality, seeing them more as test subjects than people. Some are overheard talking about their personal life, and how being in the Asylum makes one miss the people on the outside.

Trivia[]

  • Some unused dialogues for the Scientists in The Outlast Trials implies that they were originally planned to comment on certain scenarios during the trials.
    • These dialogues would include the context of the characters in trials, such as the Orphanage making Reagents mentally regressed from their age which causes them to become emotionally attached to "totem objects," the Fun Park stating that Mother Gooseberry is seeking approval from her dead father, and the Toy Factory stating they wanted to revert the Reagents to their childlike state so they become much more vulnerable to the brainwashing process.
  • Some unused dialogues for the Scientists in The Outlast Trials reveals much more of their sadistic personalities; taking satisfaction from torturing their subjects, insulting Reagents that barely survived or killed from the trial, and amplifying the subliminals on Ex-Pops, which means torturing or drugging them further to make them become more effective hunters.
